Sixth Inning Dooms B-Mets in 9-4 Loss

PORTLAND, ME - The Portland Sea Dogs scored six runs in the sixth inning to beat the Binghamton Mets, 9-4, on Monday night at Hadlock Field. Portland sent ten men to the plate and racked up five hits against two pitchers to earn the win in the series opener.

The Portland Sea Dogs drew first blood against Greg Peavey in the second inning. With a runner aboard, Sean Coyle blistered a 1-1 pitch over the Maine Monster in left-center field for his second home run of the season.

Binghamton matched Coyle's blast with a Monster shot of their own in the third. Owens quickly registered the first two outs of the inning, but fell into trouble by issuing a four-pitch walk to Kyle Johnson. Brian Burgamy tied the game by sending Owens' 3-1 pitch over the left field wall for his fourth homer of the road trip. Kevin Plawecki kept the inning alive with a double and Matt Clark gave Binghamton a two-run cushion by crushing a drive over the right-center field wall, his fourth round-tripper of the season.

Peavey flipped it into cruise control after allowing two runs in the second. From the third to the fifth, the B-Mets righty posted three perfect innings, needing just 25 pitches to dispatch of nine Portland hitters. Mookie Betts' double to lead off the sixth snapped a stretch of ten straight batters put down by Peavey.

The two-bagger set the table for a big Portland rally. After Peavey walked two to load the bases, Carlos Rivero made it a one-run game with a sac fly. Adam Kolarek took over on the mound and could not stop the bleeding. Stefan Welch greeted the lefty by lacing a two-run, go-ahead double into the left-field alley. Blake Swihart, Coyle and Peter Hissey all tacked onto the lead with run-producing singles.

Robby Scott took over from Owens in the fifth and kept the B-Mets offense in check over 2-1/3 innings on the mound. The southpaw retired the first seven batters he faced and exited after allowing a one-out single in the eighth. Miguel Celestino took the game to the finish line with 1-2/3 shutout innings.

Peavey (0-1) allowed five runs on two hits while walking four in the losing effort. He struck out a Double-A career-high seven batters and watched two of his runs score with Kolarek on the hill. Scott (1-0) tossed 2-1/3 innings of shutout relief to earn his first win of the season. Owens allowed four runs on six hits, including two home runs, over five innings in the no-decision.

The B-Mets (7-4) continue their three-game visit to Portland on Tuesday night at 6:00 PM. RHP Matt Bowman gets the ball against RHP Keith Couch. The Horizons Federal Credit Union Pregame Show begins at 5:45 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
