Schimpf Powers Fisher Cats to 3-2 Win
April 14, 2014 - Eastern League (EL1)
New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
MANCHESTER, N.H. - On a night when a power outage caused a mid-game light delay, Ryan Schimpf's power lifted the Fisher Cats (4-7) to a 3-2 win over the New Britain Rock Cats on Monday night. Schimpf blasted the go-ahead home run in the sixth to make a winner out of Deck McGuire while giving the Fisher Cats the edge in the series opener.
Things didn't look good for either team early on as a light tower malfunction caused a 35-minute delay after three innings. When the game resumed, New Britain was still holding on to its 1-0 lead, thanks to a Reynaldo Rodriguez home run in the second inning against McGuire (W; 2-1)
Things still looked bleak when the Rock Cats went to their bullpen. That is, until the sixth inning. With a one down, Brad Glenn singled off losing pitcher Dan Turpen (L; 0-1) to start the rally. Schimpf followed with a blast to center field, sitting on a 3-1 fastball for his third homer of the season and his second of the homestand.
The bullpen protected the lead the rest of the way as Tyler Ybarra tossed two scoreless innings before Gregory Infante shut the door with a 1-2-3 ninth.
McGuire earned the victory by allowing two earned runs over six full innings, his longest outing of the year. He struck out three while allowing just four hits. The victory had added significance as it broke a three-way tie for franchise wins with McGuire picking up his 18th in a Fisher Cats uniform.
Schimpf led a light offensive night with a double and his home run. Kenny Wilson, Andy Burns, Brad Glenn, and Michael Crouse all added singles.
The series continues on Tuesday night at 5:35 p.m. for a regional Chamber of Commerce Mixer presented by Small Dog Electronics. Tickets are available at the team box office, by calling (603) 641-2005, and by visiting www.nhfishercats.com.
The pitching match-up features Austin Bibens-Dirkx (0-1, 4.15) against Rock Cats RHP D.J. Baxendale (0-1, 5.91). Tom Gauthier and Dick Lutsk will have the radio call beginning at 5:15 p.m. on WGIR 610 AM and www.nhfishercats.com.
