Six Barons named to 2006 Southern League South Division All-Star Team

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Six Birmingham Barons have been named to the 2006 Southern League South Division All-Star Team, as announced today by the Southern League.

Birmingham players selected for the 2006 Southern League All-Star Game, which will be played on Monday, July 10th, at Riverwalk Stadium in Montgomery, Ala., include: outfielder Ricardo Nanita, designated hitter Corey Smith and pitchers Lance Broadway, B.J. LaMura, Tyler Lumsden and Ehren Wassermann.

A 6'0", 200-lb. native of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, Nanita is currently hitting .271 (75-for-271) with 11 doubles, six HR, 34 RBI and 35 runs scored in 78 games played. A fourth year pro, Nanita was selected as having the best strike-zone discipline in the Chicago White Sox farm system by Baseball America prior to the 2006 season.

Now in his seventh season of pro ball, Smith was signed as a free agent by the White Sox on April 20th and assigned to Birmingham. For the year, Smith is hitting .288 (63-for-219) with 11 doubles, nine HR, 26 RBI and 35 runs scored in 62 games. The owner of .479 slugging percentage, Smith was named the Southern League's Hitter of the Week for the period of April 24th - 30th earlier this season. A native of Piscataway, N.J., Smith (6'1", 200 lbs.) is currently ranked second in the Southern League with a .413 on-base percentage.

Broadway, a 6'3", 190-lb. right-hander from Grand Prairie, Tex., is currently 4-6 with a 2.76 ERA, two complete games and one shutout in 16 starts on the mound. In his 98.0 IP, Broadway has team-high 65 strikeouts against just 28 walks. Selected as the Southern League's Pitcher of the Week for the period of May 8th - 14th earlier this year, Broadway, a second-year professional, was ranked as the #8 prospect in the White Sox organization entering the 2006 season. The Chicago White Sox first-round selection in the 2005 First-Year Player Draft, Broadway was named as a finalist for the Clemens Award during his final season of collegiate baseball at Texas Christian University in 2005 (15-1 record, 1.62 ERA).

A 6'1", 200-lb. righty from Ronkonkoma, N.Y., LaMura has posted a 4-0 record and a 2.06 ERA in his 26 relief appearances in 2006. In his 39.1 IP, LaMura has registered 52 strikeouts and allowed just nine earned runs while holding the opposition to a .185 batting average. LaMura, a fifth-year pro, has recorded at least one strikeout in each of his 26 appearances thus far in 2006.

Lumsden, a 6'4", 215-lb. left-hander, is currently 8-2 with a 2.83 ERA in 16 games started. The owner of 61 strikeouts in 98.2 IP, Lumsden was named as having the Best Slider in the White Sox organization by Baseball America prior to the 2006 season. Lumsden is currently ranked third in the Southern League in wins (eight), as well. After making his professional debut in 2004, Lumsden missed the entire 2005 season after undergoing surgery on his pitching elbow.

A fourth-year professional from Sylacauga, Ala., Wassermann has registered 14 saves in 33 relief appearances thus far in 2006. Wassermann, a 6'0", 185-lb. sidearm right-hander, currently owns a 1.50 ERA and has held the opposition to a .208 batting average in 36.0 IP. Signed by the White Sox organization after appearing in a regional tryout camp in 2003, Wassermann played two seasons of baseball at Samford University, as well.

After concluding their current ten-game roadtrip, the Birmingham Barons (5-4 in the second half), who are currently tied for first place in the Southern League's South Division, will return home to host the Huntsville Stars in a five-game homestand beginning on Tuesday, July 4th, at Hoover Metropolitan Stadium.
