
Three BayBears named to South Division All-Star Team

Marietta, GA-The Southern League of Professional Baseball has announced the roster for 2006 South Division All-Star Team. Three members of the BayBears team will participate in the 2006 all-star game: Infielder Luis Cruz, Catcher George Kottaras, and Outfielder Drew Macias. Former BayBear Pitcher Jared Wells was also named to the team but will not participate due to his promotion to AAA Portland.
Cruz, 22, was acquired from the Boston Red Sox in December of 2002 and is now in his second season at AA Mobile. He is currently second in the Southern League in both doubles (24) and extra base hits (34.) Luis is hitting .282 with seven home runs and 43 RBI's through 72 games this season with the BayBears. Luis was recently named to the World Team for the Major League Futures Game in Pittsburgh as a part of Major League Baseball's All-Star Game festivities. Cruz, a native of Sonora, Mexico, also played for team Mexico in the inaugural World Baseball Classic this past March.
Kottaras, 23,was drafted in the 20th round of the 2002 draft by the Padres. George is fifth in the Southern League with a .396 on base percentage and his .278 batting average trails only Cruz for the BayBears top spot. In 68 games for Mobile, he has hit eight homeruns and accumulated 30 RBI's. Kottaras will join his BayBears teammate Luis Cruz on the World Team at the Major League Futures Game. In 2004, George represented Greece in the Summer Olympic Games. Baseball America ranks him as the number two minor league prospect in the Padres Organization.
Macias, 23, was selected in the 35th round of the 2003 draft by the Padres. Drew leads the BayBears with 76 games played in the 2006 season. In those games he has hit .265 with three homeruns and 28 RBI's. This years Southern League Game will be the first All-Star appearance of Drew's professional career.
Wells, 24, was 4-3 with a 2.64 ERA in 14 Games with Mobile before he was promoted to AAA Portland on June 15th. Jared was originally selected by the Padres in the 31st round of the 2002 draft. After the 2005 season the San Diego Padres named Jared the Minor League Pitcher of The Year. He was also a member of Team USA in the 2005 Baseball World Cup, hosted in the Netherlands.
The 2006 Southern League All-Star Game will be held in Montgomery, Alabama at Riverwalk Stadium, home of the Montgomery Biscuits on July 10th.
