Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release
WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - Mike Sislo's game-winning goal completed his hat trick and a four-point night as the Albany Devils fended off the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins for a 6-5 win on Friday at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza.
Looking to end their four-game losing streak, the Devils came out determined in the first period and jumped out to an early two-goal lead. Skating on the power play, some quick passing by Albany freed Reid Boucher between the hash marks to receive a Scott Timmins pass and one-time a shot to the top corner.
Less than three minutes later, it was Rotislav Olesz putting the Devils up, 2-0, with a wrist shot from the far circle that found a sliver of space over the shoulder of starting goalie Peter Mannino.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton responded at 9:41 of the first as Harry Zolnierczyk picked up a loose puck along the boards, stickhandled into the high slot and let loose a shot that sailed over the glove of netminder Keith Kinkaid.
The Devils needed only 42 seconds to go back up by two when Sislo fired a turnaround shot from between the circles that snuck over Mannino's blocker that made the score 3-1.
In the second period, Albany seemingly had an answer every time Wilkes-Barre/Scranton tried to close the gap. Scott Harrington pulled the Penguins within a goal at 2:26 with a power play goal, but Sislo matched that with a shorthanded marker four minutes later.
With the remaining time on the power play, Tom Kostopoulos cut the Albany lead in half, sweeping in a rebound chance at 7:33 for his fourth goal of the season.
The Devils going ahead took back their two-goal edge, 5-3, with 4:46 until the second intermission as Sislo set up Kelly Zajac in front for a shot that slipped through the pads of starter Peter Mannino.
Two goals, only 46 seconds apart would help the Pens come back to tie the game. Mike Carman pounded a rebound through a scrum in the crease and Chris Conner quickly followed to knot the game at five all.
Sislo completed the hat trick at 11:45 of the third period on the power play to give Albany the victory.
Peter Mannino made 14 saves on 19 shots through the first two periods. Jeff Deslauriers took the loss, turning away 6-of-7 shots to fall to 7-1-2 on the year.
The Penguins faceoff against the Springfield Falcons at MassMutual Center on Sunday, Nov. 10 at 3:00 p.m.
