Flames Acquire Ladislav Smid and Olivier Roy from the Edmonton

Calgary, AB - The Calgary Flames announced today that they have acquired defenceman Ladislav Smid and goaltender Olivier Roy from the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for forward Roman Horak and goaltender Laurent Brossoit.

Smid was originally drafted in the first round of the 2004 NHL Entry Draft, ninth overall, by the Anaheim Ducks. He was acquired by Edmonton on July 3, 2006, with Joffrey Lupul and draft picks in exchange for defenceman Chris Pronger. Smid has played 474 games in the NHL recording 65 points and 391 penalty minutes. The 6'3", 209lbs rearguard has become known has one of the league's top shot blockers and typically plays against the opponents top offensive players.

Roy was drafted by the Oilers in the 5th round, 133rd overall, in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft. He is currently in his 3rd professional season following a stellar career in the QMJHL including Rookie of the Year honours with Cape Breton in the 2007-08 season. Last year with Edmonton's AHL affiliate in Oklahoma City, Roy posted a 2.77 GAA and a .902 save percentage in 22 games. He also played 9 games with Stockton of the ECHL recording a 1.21 GAA and a .961 save percentage. The native of Amqui, PQ played for Team Canada at the 2011 World Junior Hockey Championships.
