St. John's IceCaps News Release
ST. JOHN'S, NL - Eric O'Dell led the way with a goal and two assists and Eddie Pasquale turned aside 28 shots, as the St. John's IceCaps pounded the Manchester Monarchs 5-2 Friday night at Mile One Centre.
Jason Jaffrey, Kael Mouillerat, Blair Riley, and John Albert had the other tallies for the IceCaps, who dominated from start to finish.
Nick Deslauriers and Scott Sabourin had the tallies for the Monarchs, while Nick Jones made 27 saves.
Jaffrey opened the scoring for the IceCaps just over a minute into the contest, when he tipped Julian Melchiori's floating wrister from the point through the legs of Jones.
With the IceCaps on the man-advantage, St. John's extended the lead to two at 14:40 as Albert notched his third tally of the season. Taking a behind-the-net feed from O'Dell, Albert wired one top-shelf on the Monarchs netminder that beat him glove side.
In the second frame, St. John's picked up where it left off when Riley made it a 3-0 cushion at 8:42. Capitalizing on the extra attacker during a delayed Monarchs' penalty call, Albert dished it off to Riley in the slot who wired his first of the season past Jones.
Manchester finally got on the board in the third, on a goal from rearguard Deslauriers at 3:18. After battling for a puck along the inboards, Colin Miller slid the puck to Deslauriers who made no mistake in sneaking one high on Pasquale to make it 3-1.
Just over five minutes later, however, the IceCaps restored their lead to three. Taking a feed from Melchiori after the face-off, O'Dell blasted a wrister that deflected in traffic and landed on the stick of Mouillerat, who made no mistake in firing the loose puck into the yawning cage of the down-and-out Jones.
To put the game out of reach for Manchester, O'Dell took a heads-up pass from Mouillerat before launching a wrist shot that squeaked through Jones with just five minutes left to play.
Sabourin scored late for Manchester after taking a feed from Jordan Weal and stepping into a slap shot that eluded Pasquale high on the blocker side.
The IceCaps go for the sweep tomorrow night when they facee off against the Monarchs again at Mile One Centre. Catch all the action with play-by-play broadcaster Brian Rogers on 930AM This Is Newfoundland. Puck drop is set for 7:30 NT, with the pre-game show getting underway at 7:00.
