Kansas City Mavericks News Release
INDEPENDENCE, Missouri - The Missouri Mavericks wrapped up their weekend home-and-home series with the Tulsa Oilers Saturday night at Independence Events Center. Nick Sirota's star would shine bright as the second-year forward would tally three goals, but the Mavs would lose to the Tulsa Oilers, 5-4. The loss was the Mavericks fourth in a row.
Halfway through the first period, Tulsa got on the scoreboard with a goal from Braden Walls. Derek Eastman and Marty Standish got the assists on the goal. Evan Kotsopoulos doubled the Oilers lead four minutes later, taking a pass from Walls. Standish also got an assist on the goal. The period ended with the Mavs down 2-0. Tulsa outshot the Mavericks 9-8 in the periods.
The second period began with the Mavericks drawing closer to the Oilers with a goal from Nick Sirota, making the score 2-1. Bill Vandermeer and Cole Ruwe were given assists on the goal. The Oilers were right back on the attack just 40 seconds later with a goal from Tom Dignard assisted by Walls and Jason Weeks. Chad Costello added another goal on a penalty shot two and a half minutes later to extend the Oilers' lead to 4-1. Nick Sirota cut the Tulsa lead in half at the 12:57 mark, giving him his second goal of the game. The goal was unassisted. The period ended with the Mavs trailing 4-2. At the end of two, Tulsa was outshooting the Mavs 22-20.
Things would get interesting in the third period. After a missed wide-open net opportunity, the Oilers collected the rebound and capitalized on the opportuninty as Gary Steffes scored on a pass from Anthony Battaglia. The goal would be the last for Tulsa, but it still left the Mavericks down 5-2 with over 17 minutes to play. The Mavs drew within two goals just 17 seconds later, as Derek Pallardy found the net. Carlyle Lewis was given an assist on the goal. Nick Sirota provided the silver lining in an otherwise cloudy evening, scoring a hat trick goal with just over a minute remaining. Blake Forsyth got an assist on the goal and Shawn Fensel got his first point as a Maverick with an assist as well.
Sirota's three-goal performance would not be enough however, as the Mavs went on to lose 5-4 and drop their fourth straight game.
Robby Nolan finished the night with 20 saves on 25 shots. Trevor Cann made 30 saves on 34. Missouri finished the night zero-for-four, as did Tulsa.
Sirota's hat trick was the second this year by a Maverick and third in franchise history. Sirota joins Walker Wintoneak and Karl Sellan as the only Mavs to score three goals in one game.
The Mavericks will travel to Moline, Illinois to take on the Quad City Mallards Sunday evening. They return home on Tuesday to take on the Wichita Thunder.
