RiverKings-PrairieThunder Weeklong Set Ends Tonight
January 29, 2011 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Mississippi RiverKings News Release
SOUTHAVEN, MS --- The Mississippi RiverKings again host the Bloomington PrairieThunder tonight at the DeSoto Civic Center in Southaven, with game time set for 7:05 PM. It's the final of three consecutive meetings between the Central Hockey League (CHL) teams this week at the DCC. Broadcast coverage of tonight's game is on Sports 56, WHBQ-AM, with Bob Bakken calling the action at 6:50 PM Central time.
Mississippi shut out the Bloomington PrairieThunder 5-0 last night at the DeSoto Civic Center, as goaltender Larry Sterling stopped all 28 shots on goal that came his way in posting his tenth win of the year. Five separate RiverKings each scored goals, with Patrik Levesque scoring the first goal and game-winning goal at 16:24 of the first period. Levesque also added an assist on the final goal of the game scored by Darrell Stoddard. Louis Dumont netted a shorthanded goal, his fourth "shortie" of the year. Matt Summers also scored a goal and assist, and Russell Smith and Andrew Lackner each assisted on a pair of red-lighters in the win.
Last night ¬â¢s shutout effort by Sterling moved him to within one of tying the team record for shutouts by a goaltender in one season at three. It equals the two shutouts Sterling fashioned in his 2006-07 season with the RiverKings. Three Mississippi/Memphis goaltenders have earned three shutouts in one year; the last to do it was Kevin Beech in the 2008-09 campaign. In his five CHL seasons, Sterling has collected seven shutouts, five of which have come with the RiverKings and two with Fort Worth. Before last night, Sterling ¬â¢s last shutout effort came exactly two weeks prior, in a 3-0 win at Missouri on January 14th.
In other player news, Patrik Levesque has six games of two or more points a game, and has scored two goals in a pair of contests since coming to Mississippi from Quad City. The RiverKings are 6-4-1 when Levesque scores a goal. Russell Smith set a season high for plus-minus last night, going plus-4 in the win over Bloomington. Smith also equaled his season high for assists in a game at two. Louis Dumont leads the RiverKings with four shorthanded goals and is tied for the league lead in "shorties." Mississippi is 7-2-1 when Dumont finds the back of the net. Matt Summers has had eight games of two or more points and Mississippi is 8-5-0 when he nets a goal. Andrew Lackner ¬â¢s two assists last night equaled season highs for assists and points in a game. Brennan Sarazin also equaled season highs for assists and points in a contest at one. The RiverKings are 7-1-0 when Darrell Stoddard scores a goal. Stoddard has three points in his last three games. Chris Richards has six points in his last three contests.
The five goals scored by the RiverKings last evening equaled a season high for goals scored. The last night the RiverKings netted five in a game was on January 15th, a 5-3 victory at Evansville. Mississippi is 9-5-0 in Saturday night games this year. Last night ¬â¢s win moved the RiverKings to 6-6-1 in Friday encounters. Mississippi has a winning record against the Turner Conference this year at 15-10-0 and is now 2-2-0 in the series against Bloomington. 20 of the team ¬â¢s 21 wins have come when the RiverKings have allowed zero or one power play goal against (20-13-1). Mississippi has won eleven times when the RiverKings score one power play goal (11-9-0).
Tonight's game is Belhaven University Faith and Family Night, presented by Chick-Fil-A.
