Dayton Gems News Release

Whenever a team loses a game in a shootout, there's no doubt that the loss is usually a heartbreaker.

Saturday's 5-4 loss to Evansville may have been even more heartbreaking than normal.

The Dayton Gems nearly completed a three-goal comeback on Saturday, Jan. 29. After falling behind 4-1 in the second period to Evansville, the Gems were able to score three unanswered goals to end regulation and tie the game at 4-4.

But after all the hard work that was done to tie the game, Dayton's dream of winning came crashing down when Evansville's Braden Desmet scored the only goal in the shootout to give the IceMen the 5-4 victory.

For the game, Dayton allowed Evansville to take 50 shots on the night. Dayton never took more than 10 shots in a single period.

Despite the influx of shots, the Gems scored quickly to start the game. Jonathan Ornelas scored the first goal of the game just 2:07 after it started to give Dayton a 1-0 lead.

After that, the IceMen took over. Evansville scored four unanswered goals from the midway point of the first period through the second period to make it a 4-1 game.

It wasn't until just 1:07 remained in the second period that Dayton started to make a comeback.

For the 16th time this season, Mike Vaskivuo recorded a goal and made it a 4-2 game.

In the third period, Ornelas scored his second goal of the game to put the Gems to within one goal as the score became 4-3.

It was then Vaskivuo who tied the game up at 4-4. With just 48 seconds remaining in regulation, Vaskivuo took an assist from Brett Lutes and scored the third unanswered goal for Dayton to tie the game.

After both teams failed to score in overtime, the game headed into a shootout, which is when the IceMen captured the win.

The Gems will now head back to Dayton and take on Wichita for the second time in three days. The game will start at 5 p.m. at Hara Arena.

The Kettering Medical Center is proud to be the official title sponsor of the Gems for the 2010-11 season.
