Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
SIOUX CITY, Iowa - The Gary SouthShore RailCats struck first, but ultimately fell to the Sioux City Explorers 5-2 on Wednesday in Iowa.
For the first time in the series, the RailCats opened the scoring, plating a run in the third to take a 1-0 advantage. Adam Klein coaxed a one out walk from Sioux City starter Nick Schumacher and Cristian Guerrero walked with two outs to place two on for Brad Boyer, who singled up the middle to score Klein with the first run. Schumacher walked five in the game and battled through an elevated pitch count to toss five innings but earned the win when his team rallied.
Nolan Nicholson was equally strong for the RailCats, plowing through four innings before issuing walks to Kent Sakamoto and Ray Serrano to lead off the fifth. Wally Backman, Jr. evened the score with an RBI single and the X's added an unearned run to take a 2-1 edge. Sioux City pushed across three more in the sixth to open a 5-1 lead as Backman lifted a sacrifice fly and Tyler Goodro notched an RBI single. Nicholson worked through 5.1 innings, allowing four earned runs on seven hits with two walks and two strikeouts, but fell to 0-4 on the season.
The RailCats took one back in the top of the seventh, scoring the first run of the year off of Andrew Snowdon as a reliever. Chris Carrara singled to open the inning and scored on a sharp single by Guerrero with two outs. Emiliano Fruto slammed the door in the ninth to produce the win.
Guerrero finished with two hits in the loss. The bullpen was again solid, throwing the final 2.2 innings without allowing a run. Jeremy Hauer, Will Krout, and James Baker all pitched out of the pen with Krout and Baker netting two strikeouts each.
The series and road trip will conclude tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. LHP Derrick Gordon (0-2, 3.27) will make his fifth start of the season while the Explorers will send RHP Taylor King (1-0, 3.50).
The RailCats return home on Friday night to meet Winnipeg on Boy Band Night at U. S. Steel Yard with fireworks to follow. Other homestand highlights include Where's Waldo Night and a beanie giveaway on Saturday, an appearance from White Sox legend Carlos May on Sunday with a baseball glove giveaway, and a visit from Chris Medina of American Idol on Monday for Solo Night plus much more.
