Wingnuts Win Again in Extras

WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Wingnuts won 4-3 in 12 innings over the Fort Worth Cats at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium on Wednesday night.

Trailing 3-2 in the bottom of the ninth, and down to their final strike with two outs and no one on base, Josh Horn worked out a walk to keep the Wingnuts alive. Horn stole second and then advanced to third when first baseman Trent Lockwood misplayed Evan Button's groundball to first base. With runners on the corners, Ryan Patterson doubled down the left field line on the first pitch from Cats' closer Matthew Sartor to tie the game.

Wingnuts' reliever Josh Dew stranded a runner on second base in three consecutive innings from the 10th through the 12th, setting up Wichita's game-winning rally.

Facing left-hander Cody White, Juan Richardson and Jorge Delgado worked out back-to-back walks with one out. Josh Workman was next and ripped a line drive to the fence in right-center field that scored Richardson with the winning run.

The Wingnuts trailed 3-0 heading into the seventh, but pulled themselved within one run thanks to an RBI single from Horn and an RBI double from Button.

Fort Worth took the early lead in the second on a sacrifice fly from Cory Morales. John Allen and Brian Fryer hit leadoff home runs in the fourth and fifth innings respectively to give the Cats a 3-0 lead.

Junior Guerra started for the Wingnuts, allowing three earned runs on six hits in 6.0 IP. Guerra struck out four and walked three in a no-decision.

Dew earned the win with 2.1 scoreless relief innings. The Wingnuts bullpen combined for 6.0 shutout frames, with Trent Lare, Brandon Mathes, and Jared Simon combining for 3.2 innings.

Dwayne Pollok started for Fort Worth and went six shutout innings on four hits. Pollok also took a no-decision, allowing one walk and striking out five.

The Wingnuts are now 4-1 in extra innings this season. Fort Worth left 15 runners on base in the loss.
