St. Paul Saints News Release
AMARILLO, TX (June 1, 2011) - The St. Paul Saints finally used the playing surface and their aggressiveness that Amarillo National Bank Sox Stadium allows for as they scored 10 runs over the final two innings and defeated the Amarillo Sox 14-10 on Wednesday night.
There were story lines aplenty. The Saints came back from five down in the eighth, scored six runs in the inning, only to give up the tying run in the bottom of the eighth, but scored four in the ninth with two outs. The Sox committed an American Association tying seven errors, which was set by Sioux City on July 8, 2010. The Saints committed three of their own. Sox second baseman Matt Tucker committed three of the seven errors tying a record for errors by a second baseman, set by two others. Sox starting pitcher Ryan Mitchell was left out there for 138 pitches as he allowed eight runs on 11 hits while walking two and striking out nine in 7.1 innings, but only two of the eight runs were earned. The Saints scored a runner from first on a single to right, scored a runner from second on a ground ball to second and on top of all that both teams combined for 18 hits.
With the Saints trailing 9-4 in the eighth and showing no signs of offense, they woke up when Sox manager John Harris elected to leave his starting pitcher in the game. Ronnie Bourquin led off with a single and moved to second when Richard Mercado reached on a fielding error by shortstop Jason White. With one out Jake Krause singled home a run to make it 9-5. Adam Frost added a two-run single, and advanced to second on a fielding error by the left fielder, moving the Saints within two. Justin Snyder's infield single and a bad throw by Tucker at second scored Frost from second to make it 9-8 and allowed Snyder to move to second. A wild pitch moved Snyder to third, but with the infield in Brandon Tripp's ground out to second didn't score the run. Jason Cooper, however, blooped a double to left to tie the game at nine. Jonathan Van Every finished the scoring with an RBI single to center giving the Saints a 10-9 lead.
The Sox, however, tied it in the bottom of the inning on a two-out RBI single from Jason White.
The Saints answered back in the top of the ninth and got a fortuitous bounce as the lead off man Bourquin hit a routine grounder to second, that took a crazy hop over the right shoulder of Tucker. Mercado sacrificed him to second and Jeff Howell's ground out moved Bourquin to third. Krause came through again with another RBI single to give the Saints an 11-10 lead. Krause finished the night 3-5 with a double, two RBI and three runs scored. Frost then singled to right moving Krause to second. Frost finished the night 4-5 with three RBI and three runs scored and extended his hitting streak to eight. After a wild pitch advanced Krause to third with Frost staying at first, Snyder singled to right scoring Krause easily, but Frost scored all the way from first on an incredible slide at the plate where he slid to the foul side of home plate, popped up, contorted his body to avoid the tag, lunged over home plate and then dove back to touch the plate before the tag could get him to give the Saints a 13-10 lead. The final run scored when Brandon Tripp's grounder was thrown away by Tucker allowing Snyder to score.
Eight of nine Saints collected hits and it is the sixth consecutive game they have pounded out double digits in hits and now have 92 hits during the six game road trip. Tripp collected one hit and extended his career high hitting streak to 10.
The same two teams meet in the finale of the four game series on Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. at Amarillo National Bank Sox Stadium. The Saints send RHP Matt Long (2-1, 4.24) to the mound against Sox RHP Colin Allen (0-2, 7.98). The game can be heard on Relevant Radio 1330.
