Hartford Yard Goats News Release

Reading, PA - Left fielder Colin Simpson hit his second home run of the season but it was not enough as the Yard Goats dropped a 7-1 contest to the Reading Fightin Phils on Sunday afternoon in the final game of the six-game series at FirstEnergy Stadium in Reading, Pennsylvania. Hartford won four of the six games of the road trip, its first series win of 2023. The Yard Goats return home to Dunkin' Park on Tuesday and host the New York Mets affiliate, the Binghamton Rumble Ponies.

The Fightin' Phils scored the first run of the game as Carlos De La Cruz belted an 0-2 pitch from Yard Goats starter Chris McMahon over the left field fence, making it 1-0. Reading added a pair of runs in the fourth inning on Johan Rojas' two-run homer. McMahon, who grew up 40 minutes from the ballpark, worked four innings and recorded three strikeouts. He had a 1-2-3 second inning and retired six in a row from the first to third innings.

The Yard Goats scored their only run in the fifth inning, as left fielder Colin Simpson smashed a solo home run over the right field fence off Reading starter David Parkinson. Hartford had runners at first and second base in the fifth and Grant Lavigne at the plate, but Bladimir Restituyo was thrown out trying to steal third base to end the inning.

Reading added two runs in the seventh and eighth innings to win their second game of the season. Madison Stokes had three hits in just his second game for the Fightins.

The Yard Goats return home to Dunkin' Park on Tuesday (7:10 PM), and host the New York Mets affiliate, the Binghamton Rumble Ponies. The game can be heard on AM 1410 WPOP, FM 100.9 and the iheart radio app.
