South Carolina Stingrays News Release
Evansville, IN - Forward Wayne Simpson recorded four assists and goaltender Keegan Asmundson made 21 saves for his first professional win and shutout to push the South Carolina Stingrays (42-19-1-6) over the Evansville IceMen (14-44-5-5) 4-0 at the Ford Center Sunday evening.
Forward Caleb Herbert put the Stingrays in front on the power play 8:43 into the first period lifting a wrist shot over the glove of IceMen goaltender Branden Komm (L, 10 saves on 13 shots) off the bottom of the right-wing circle. Simpson and defenseman Michal Cajkovsky earned assists.
The Stingrays continued to light the lamp in the second period, burying three more goals for a 4-0 advantage through 40 minutes of action. Captain Andrew Rowe made it a two-goal lead 54 seconds into the stanza pushing the puck off IceMen forward Jarret Lukin's stick and under the left pad of Komm. Simpson chipped in the lone assist.
Moments later, defenseman Drew MacKenzie blasted in his sixth goal of the campaign from the right wing point with help from Simpson and Rowe to chase Komm out from the goal in favor of Alex Vazzano (14 saves on 15 shots) at 4:07. Forward and former IceMen Brandon Wong picked up his team-leading 20th goal of the season and completed the game scoring at 9:05 from MacKenzie and Simpson.
The Stingrays finished the game going 1-for-2 on the power play while the IceMen went 0-for-4.
