
Silver Hawks Use Long Ball to Blast Chiefs

South Bend, IN- The Peoria Chiefs got an up-close look at the first place South Bend Silver Hawks and their impressive offensive numbers Tuesday night in a 10-3 loss. South Bend pounded two homers and 12 hits en route to handing Sean Gallagher his fifth loss of the season.
Peoria jumped out first scoring twice against South Bend's Steven Jackson in the first. Sam Fuld singled and went to second on a groundout. Eric Patterson followed with an RBI single up the middle to bring Fuld home. Two batters later, Drew Larsen tripled to center to score Patterson for a 2-0 Chiefs lead.
South Bend came right back against Gallagher in the home half of the first. Emilio Bonafacio started the inning with a walk and a stolen base before moving to third on a ground out. Agustin Murillo got South Bend on the board with a sacrifice fly and Gallagher issued a two out walk to Carlos Gonzales. Cedar Nicolas followed with a double to left-center to tie the game 2-2.
In the 3rd, Gallagher recorded two quick outs before walking Murillo on four pitches. Gonzales followed with a long homer to right, his 16th of the season for a 4-2 South Bend lead. Two innings later, Murillo knocked Gallagher from the game with a solo homer to left, his 14th of the season. Mike Jones relieved Gallagher and walked the first two batters he faced before giving up a two run double to Orlando Mercado as South Bend took a 7-2 lead.
Jesse Schmidt's solo homer brought the Chiefs back to 7-3 in the 7th, but the Silver Hawks put the game away with two in the 7th and one in the 8th off the Chiefs bullpen.
Gallagher (13-5) took the loss after allowing five runs on four hits in 4 1/3 innings. He tied a career high by walking five and the right-hander struck out three. For the first time all season he does not lead the MWL in ERA falling to 2.552, just behind Andy Sonanstine of Southwest Michigan at 2.545.

Drew Larsen (LF) - Larsen tripled home Eric Patterson in the first inning and then singled in his next two at-bats. He collected three of the Chiefs first six hits in the game to finish 3-for-4 with an RBI. Notes... Ryan Harvey didn't start for the fourth straight game due to tight hamstrings...Gallagher was attempting to move into the top five on the Chiefs single season win list with 14...Bo Flowers collected the Chiefs third pinch-hit basehit with a 9th inning single...South Bend leads the season series 2-0 with six games remaining...The Chiefs will have Mike Billek (2-0) on the mound Wednesday night against Koley Kolberg....Game time is 7:00 PM and all the action can be heard on WOAM 1350 AM or www.peoriachiefs.com.
