South Bend Silver Hawks News Release

South Bend, IN - The promotion at Coveleski Stadium Wednesday night was entitled It's About Time. For many in the Northern Indiana area the debate has raged for awhile as to what time zone this portion of this state should be a part of. Tuesday night, the Silver Hawks almost ran out of time, but were able to come from behind for their 34th victory after trailing, defeating the Peoria Chiefs 4-2.

Peoria got on the board first in the opening frame. Sam Fuld reached on a fielding error by Emilio Bonifacio and scored when the Midwest League leader in home runs, Ryan Harvey blasted a home run down the left-field line for his 22nd of the season and a 2-0 lead for the Chiefs.

The Hawks eventually got on the board in the sixth. Emilio Bonifacio started the inning with a single to left field and Wilkin Castillo reached first on a bunt single, Emilio Bonifacio advancing to third on throwing error by Chiefs starting pitcher Mike Billek. Augie Murillo drove in Bonifacio and moved Castillo to third with a base hit to center field pulling the Hawks within one at 2-1. Castillo scored on a fly out to Chiefs left fielder Drew Larsen who threw wildly back to the infield tying the game at two.

The Hawks were able to grind out a pair of runs in the eighth. Emilio Bonifacio opened the stanza by walking. Wilkin Castillo moved Bonifacio all the way to third with a sacrifice bunt. After an out was retired Carlos Gonzalez was intentionally walked and Cesar Nicolas followed with a free pass to load the bases. Orlando Mercado then came to the plate and forced over a run when he was walked to give the Hawks a 3-2 edge after Bonifacio scored. With the bases still loaded, Peoria reliever Jerry Blevins fired a wild pitch allowing Carlos Gonzales to score for a 4-2 Silver Hawks lead.

South Bend's Esmerling Vasquez (5-4) picked up the win, while Jerry Blevins (365) suffered the loss.

Matt Elliott grabbed his 31st save of the season.

The Silver Hawks (72-50) continue their four game set against the Peoria Chiefs (59-61) at the Cove Thursday. Kellen Raab (5-5) will face off against Peoria's Matt Weber (6-9).
