Kane County Cougars News Release
Geneva, IL - The Kane County Cougars never trailed on Wednesday night at Elfstrom Stadium against the West Michigan Whitecaps, winning 3-2 in front of 7,976 fans. The Cougars jumped ahead 3-0 after two innings and never looked back behind the pitching trio of Joe Scott, Trent Peterson and Mike Mitchell.
Cliff Pennington led off the bottom of the first against Jeff Hahn with a walk, stole second and scored on a double by Myron Leslie. Travis Buck drove in Leslie with a two-single for a 2-0 game. David Castillo's one-out two-bagger in the second led to another run, as Pennington singled him home for a 3-0 affair. That was enough offense for the starter Scott, who gave up two fourth-inning tallies during his six innings. He allowed five hits, walked two and fanned four while benefiting from an inning-ending running mistake by a Whitecap in that fourth.
Peterson held the 3-2 lead with two scoreless relief frames and another blunder on the bases by the Whitecaps, who had a runner nailed at third after a cut-off throw. Scott (4-1) got the win, Hahn (2-1) took the defeat and Mitchell notched his third save. The Cougars (28-25) will try to win the series on Thursday night when Ryan Ford (12-6, 4.22) goes against Dallas Trahern (6-10, 3.41) for the Whitecaps (30-23). First pitch is set for 7 CDT.
