Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

The Topps Baseball Card Co., in partnership with Minor League Baseball, recently announced its Players of the Month for July and Kernels infielder Alexi Casilla was selected as the Midwest League's honoree.

Casilla, who signed with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in early 2003, had one of the best single months in Cedar Rapids franchise history in July. Casilla hit .413 in 25 games for the Kernels and carried an amazing on-base percentage of .500 for the month as well as a team-best .576 slugging percentage. The 5-9, 160-pound middle infielder socked three home runs, drove in nine men, scored 24 runs and stole 16 bases.

On July 10th while at Quad City, Casilla was 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored. He would go on to collect a hit in the next 21 games he played in, the longest such hitting streak by a Cedar Rapids player this season. On July 30th he was a perfect 5-for-5 at the plate in a game against Dayton, scoring three runs and driving in another.

At the onset of the month of July his batting average was a modest .288 but by August 1st it had risen nearly fifty points to .335.

Former Kernel Brandon Wood (2004) shared the same honor with Rancho Cucamonga teammate Jered Weaver in the California League.
