Burlington Bees News Release
Burlington, IA (August 17, 2005) - A slumping Burlington Bees offense came alive tonight with a season-high eight runs in the bottom of the second inning as the Bees (28-25, 62-62) went on to a 10-2 win over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (29-24, 68-55) at Community Field tonight. The Bees lead this series 2-1, are 5-2 on this home stand, and remain tied with the Kane County Cougars for the final playoff spot in the Midwest League's Western Division after the Cougars beat the West Michigan Whitecaps 3-2 at Elfstrom Stadium in Geneva, IL tonight.
The rally started as Wisconsin starter Cibney Bello issued a leadoff walk to Rusty Brown. Brian McFall followed that up with a two-run home run to left field to get the Bees on the board. McFall has homered in three of the last four games and now has 13 on the year. On the very next pitch, Bello drilled Geraldo Valentin with a fastball and home plate umpire Jeff La Scola issued a warning to both benches to the apparent dismay of both managers. Bello seemed shaken as he hit Kenard Springer in the back of the leg on the next pitch to put two men on. With both runners moving, Gary Perez bounced a single into left that drove in Valentin. Left fielder Jack Arroyo's throw to third to try to cut down Springer sailed wide and rolled to the backstop for an error allowing Perez to take second. Cody Cure shot a base hit through a drawn-in infield to drive in both runners and extend the Bees' lead to 5-0. Irving Falu followed with a single to left and Ed Lucas walked to load the bases. Bello finally got an out as Damaso Espino, the ninth man to bat in the inning, hit a chopper to third that led to a force out at the plate. With the bases still loaded, Brown ripped a single to left that drove in two runs and made it a 7-0 game. On a pitch in the dirt, Espino took off for third and when Jeff Clement's throw sailed into left field for an error, Espino scored and Brown went to second. Bello (4-3) walked McFall and was removed for Justin Jordan who got a pair of flyouts to end the inning after 13 Bees batted in the inning.
The Bees added a run in the fourth when Brown connected on a solo home run to left off of Jordan. Brown leads the team with 16 home runs which ties Chad Santos (2001) for the most home runs by a Bee since the team became an affiliate of the Kansas City Royals in '01. In the sixth, Lucas led off with a single off of Adam Brandt and later scored on a sacrifice fly by McFall who finished with three RBI.
Bees' starter Luis Cota (5-6) was the beneficiary of the outburst as he retired the first nine men he faced and faced the minimum through four innings. He allowed one run on two hits and struck out five while matching his season and career high with seven innings pitched for the fifth time this year. Adam Rowe finished the final two innings and allowed a run on four hits and struck out four. Both of Wisconsin's runs scored on wild pitches.
The Bees and Timber Rattlers will finish this series tomorrow night at 7:00 at Community Field. RH Dusty Dossett (0-0, 1.29) will start for the Bees against LH Julio Santiago (4-3, 5.13) for the Timber Rattlers. The gates will open at 6:00 for a Fat Tuesdays Thirsty Thursday featuring 2-for-$3 specials on all bottles of Pepsi products and cans of beer throughout the game. The game will be broadcast live on KBUR AM 1490 and KBKB AM 1360 with the pre-game show starting at 6:40.
