West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
GENEVA, IL - Even though the Whitecaps scored twice in the fourth inning to pull within a run of Kane County, West Michigan probably ended the inning with an empty feeling on the way to a 3-2 loss to the Cougars. When the second run of the inning crossed the plate, Brent Dlugach hit a bases-loaded ground ball to shortstop Cliff Pennington who threw to second for a fielder's choice. Wilkin Ramirez came home to give Dlugach an RBI, but Nick McIntyre came from second, rounded third toward home and was caught in a rundown to end the inning. Neither team would score for the rest of the game.
Chris Robinson overran third on a double by Brooks Colvin in the seventh and was tagged out to end the inning.
Kane County centerfielder Jose Pineda may have saved the game for the Cougars when he went to the wall in to catch a bases loaded fly ball off the bat of Luis Sabino during the fourth inning rally. One run scored in the sacrifice, but without the grab, the Whitecaps seemed poised to score three runs with McIntyre close behind Ramirez at second base. The Cougars picked up a pair of runs in the first inning on hits by Myron Leslie and Travis Buck, then added a third score on a Pennington single in the second.
Jeff Hahn went six innings on the mound and took his first loss as a Whitecap. Lavon Lewis and Ed Clelland combined to throw two scoreless innings out of the bullpen. Joe Scott started for Kane County and with six innings of work, improved to 4-0 as a starter this season. Mike Mitchell pitched the ninth and earned the save as West Michigan stranded the tying run at second base.
A Hundred in the Books: Wednesday's game was the 100th regular season meeting all time between the Whitecaps and Cougars. West Michigan leads the series, 51-49 and has won five out of eight playoff meetings, which are not included in the hundred.
End of the Road: The final game of the regular season between Kane County and West Michigan is Thursday at Elfstrom Stadium. Thursday will also end a four game road trip for the Whitecaps. RHP Dallas Trahern (6-10, 3.41) will be on the mound for West Michigan against Cougars LHP Ryan Ford (12-6, 4.22). First pitch is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time. The Eikenhout Incorporated Pre Game Show Begins at 7:50 p.m. on 1340 AM WBBL, the Whitecaps Radio Network and at mlive.com.
