Lansing Lugnuts News Release
LANSING - John Purdom's three-run double broke a 2-2 tie in the sixth inning and Trevor Lawhorn followed with a two-run homer to cap off a five-run frame as the Dayton Dragons (50-73, 20-33) once again put a dent in the Lugnuts(59-63, 22-31) postseason hopes by defeating Lansing by a 9-6 score on Wednesday evening at Oldsmobile Park.
For the third straight time in the series, the visitors jumped out to the early lead. With one out in the first inning, Adam Rosales connected for a solo homer off Lansing starter A.J. Wideman(6-9). The Dragons would make it 2-0 in the second on a one-out triple by Trevor Lawhorn and an RBI sacrifice fly by Jordan Belcher.
Wideman's teammates would rally to tie the score in the bottom of the inning against Aaron Garrison(ND). Jason Armstrong's single scored Yuber Rodriguez to cut the lead to 2-1 and a sacrifice fly by Aaron Mathews scored Eugenio Velez.
Wideman would navigate the 2-2 tie into the sixth inning but ran out of gas. With one out and the bases empty, he walked Rosales and Tonys Gutierrez. Jeremiah Piepkorn reached on an infield single to load the bases and Purdom followed with his bases-clearing double to left. In 5.1 innings, Wideman allowed five hits and six earned runs while fanning four to be saddled with the loss.
Dewon Day took over Wideman and allowed a two-run shot to Lawhorn to make it 7-2. It would be the only damage charged to Day's relief efforts.
Lansing rallied for a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth against Joe Powers(1-0) and then added a pair of runs in the seventh to cut the defecit to 7-6. Velez cranked a two-run homer in the sixth to make it 7-4. A throwing error by Belcher and an RBI double by Ryan Klosterman in the seventh allowed two more runs to score for Lansing off Carlos Bohorquez, but the Lugnuts would get no closer.
In the ninth, a two-out walk to Gutierrez by Jordan Timm set up another homer, this time by Piepkorn to complete the scoring. Lansing went in order in the ninth against Bohorquez, who navigated the final three frames to earn his first save of the season.
The Lugnuts wrapup their eight-game homestand tomorrow night as they aim for the series split. Russ Savickas(5-6) goes the hill for the Lugnuts. He will be opposed by left hander Camilo Vazquez(4-4). Game time at Oldsmobile Park is set for 6:05 p.m.
