Shorthanded Goals the Difference as Broncos Lose to Tips

October 28, 2018 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Swift Current Broncos News Release

For the first time since May 13th, 2018, the wonderful day where the Swift Current Broncos captured the Ed Chynoweth Cup as WHL Champions against the Everett Silvertips, these two clubs met for their lone matchup of the 2018-19 season.

This time, the U.S. Division leading Everett Silvertips came out on top by a score of 4-1 with a pair of shorthanded goals that proved to be the difference.

Swift Current began the game with an early power play just 45 seconds into the tilt but Silvertips forward Connor Dewar got a mini breakaway and beat rookie goaltender Isaac Poulter with a high shot.

The Broncos responded however as Tanner Nagel went hard to the net and smacked in a bouncing puck that his line mate Ethan Regnier originally put on goal to tie it 1-1.

Everett put up 14 shots on goal in the second period but Poulter was up to the task in stopping 13 of those 14 shots, the only one getting by the 16-year-old rookie was a shorthanded tally from Gianni Fairbrother at the 16:54 mark.

The Broncos began the third period shorthanded when forward Owen Blocker got a double-minor penalty for slew-footing. Dewar one-timed in his second of the night from the right point 15 seconds into the period to extend the deficit to 3-1.

With the Bronco net empty in the final two minutes of regulation, the Silvertips' Riley Sutter potted an empty netter to seal the game.

Shots on goal were 41-23 in favour of Everett. The Silvertips power play went 1/5 while the Broncos were 0/5.

The Swift Current Broncos will have to quickly forget this one as they get right back on the road for a Sunday afternoon clash with the Regina Pats at the Brandt Centre. Puck drop is set for 4:00pm MT.
