Giants Earn a 3-2 Comeback Shootout Victory Sunday against Brandon

Vancouver, B.C. - The Vancouver Giants finished off their October schedule with a thrilling 3-2 shootout victory over the Brandon Wheat Kings in front of 3378 fans at the Langley Events Centre. Offensively, Brayden Watts tied the game at 10:30 of the third on the power play, and then notched the shootout winner in Round 3 while between the pipes Trent Miner continued his strong start to the 2018-19 campaign with a terrific 37 save performance, including a lunging save in the final seconds of overtime to help his team to their 11th win of the season and their eighth win in 12 October games. Connor Gutenberg and Caiden Daley responded with goals for Brandon who got 27 saves from Jiri Patera.
1st Period:
The teams traded power play goals. Connor Gutenberg opened the scoring for Brandon at 9:01 off a redirection. Milos Roman answered with his seventh of the season for Vancouver at 13:26. Shots were 15-13 Brandon.
2nd Period:
Brandon nabbed the only goal of the middle frame. Caiden Daley whacked a backhand shot past Trent Miner right as a Wheat Kings power play had expired. Daley's second came at 12:29. Shots were 13-7 Brandon.
3rd Period:
Vancouver's power play came through when they needed it most. Brayden Watts redirected a Milos Roman feed through the legs of Jiri Patera at 10:30 to move the G-Men back even. For Watts it was his fourth goal of the season. Shots were 9-8 Vancouver in the final frame.
Overtime:
Brandon outshot Vancouver 3-0 in the extra period and came mere inches away from ending it in the final seconds on a power play. Stelio Mattheos crashed the net, and knocked a rebound towards the goal line. Trent Miner dove to right and got just enough of the puck with the heel of his goal stick right as time expired to preserve the 2-2 score through 65 minutes.
Shootout:
The Giants and the Wheat Kings both came up empty on their first two shootout attempts. Davis Koch and Bowen Byram were denied for the Giants while Stelio Mattheos and Luka Burzan came up empty for Brandon. Brayden Watts changed all of that for Vancouver when he roofed a high shot up and over the right shoulder of Patera in Round 3 to give Vancouver the lead. Trent Miner ended the game one shot later when he denied Linden McCorrister's forehand chance.
Final Shots: 39-29 Brandon
Vancouver: 2/4 on the Power Play
Brandon: 1/5 on the Power Play
Up next for Vancouver: A home showdown against Kamloops on Saturday, November 3rd at 7:00 PM.
NOTES:
- The Giants are now 3-2-1-0 in games when they trail heading into the third period.
- Trent Miner's record improved to 4-0-1-0 on the season with a league-leading 1.41 goals-against-average and a. 953 save percentage.
- The Giants improved their division and conference-leading record to 11-3-2-0 through 16 games. They are 6-2-1-0 at home.
