Short-Benched Eagles Power Past Stockton, 2-1
December 15, 2012 - ECHL (ECHL)
Colorado Eagles News Release
STOCKTON, Calif. - The Colorado Eagles, playing with just a dozen active skaters due to injuries and call-ups, defeated the Stockton Thunder, 2-1, in the teams' second meeting in as many nights. The Eagles' special teams paved the way to victory -- the power play went 2-for-3 and the penalty kill went 5-for-5 -- and Adam Brown stopped 40 shots before having his shutout bid ruined in the final two minutes of play.
Despite the short bench, Colorado had the better of the play in the opening period, out-shooting the Thunder 12-6 and out-scoring them 1-0. The Eagles got the goal on a late power play following a faceoff in the right circle, Jack Combs sent a cross-ice pass from the right midboards to Chad Costello who found Trent Daavettila on the doorstep for a deflection past Tyler Bunz.
The Thunder used a pair of power plays in the first half of the second period to build a large advantage in shots, but Brown made several big saves for Colorado to keep Stockton off the scoreboard. Colorado used that confidence to control the late portion of the period and inched the shot margin back down to one while also earning a power play that carried into the third period.
The Eagles used that man advantage to take a 2-0 lead in the first minute of the final frame when Combs added to his league leading goal total from the right circle, putting home his 19th tally of the season with the help of a screen in front of the Stockton net.
From there, the Thunder threw 21 shots at the Eagles' rookie netminder the rest of the period, and he stopped nearly all of them (the 20 third period saves tying the team's third-most in a third period all-time). With just 1:39 left, following a faceoff in the left circle of Stockton's offensive zone, Eric Hunter was able to backhand a loose puck that had made its way behind Brown in the crease.
Colorado will return home for a three-game set (Wednesday, Friday & Saturday) against the Bakersfield Condors.
