ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Despite outhitting their opposition, the Delmarva Shorebirds could not find a big offensive play when needed in a 4-1 loss to the Asheville Tourists at McCormick Field on Tuesday afternoon. The Shorebirds tied a season high by stranding 12 runners on base.

Ryan Mountcastle paced the offense with a 3-for-5 game a day after his eight-game hitting streak was snapped. He is now hitting .405 (15-for-37) in his last nine games. Cedric Mullins recorded his seventh multi-hit effort of 2016 by going 2-for-5 while Yermin Mercedes also went 2-for-5 to bring his average for the season up to .364.

Reid Love registered another quality start by allowing three runs on six hits in six innings while striking out a career-high seven batters.

Love ran into trouble in the bottom of the second inning when Josh Fuentes took advantage of McCormick Field's short right field porch with a two-run homer. The Tourists then added one more run in the frame with a pair of doubles by Jonathan Piron and Carlos Herrera. Love then settled down and would not allow a hit in his final three innings of work.

Delmarva had batters reach base safely in four of the first five innings, but could not find a way to score runs. The Shorebirds were primed for a big inning in the sixth when Mercedes and Alex Murphy led off the inning with singles, but they were only able to score one run on a throwing error.

Garrett Cleavinger pitched two innings out of the bullpen, allowing an unearned run on two hits and registering two strikeouts.

The Shorebirds did not go quietly, as the team brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth. Asheville closer Sam Thoele then buckled down to retire D.J. Stewart and Mercedes to end the game.

After an off day on Wednesday, the Shorebirds will kick off a seven-game homestand on Thursday at 7:05 p.m. against the Greensboro Grasshoppers. Ofelky Peralta (0-1, 2.42) will get the start for Delmarva.
