Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. - Cody Daily finished a home run shy of the cycle, collecting four of the Intimidators six hits in a 5-3 loss to Lakewood on Tuesday night at Intimidators Stadium supported by Carolinas HealthCare System. Kannapolis (15-17) split the four-game series with the BlueClaws and finished the 7-game home stand 4-3.

Daily finished with a career-high four hits, finishing 4-for-4 with a double, a triple, an RBI, and a run scored. The third baseman began his offensive assault on the BlueClaws after taking a ground ball off his leg in the top of the second inning that briefly hobbled the infielder. He bounced back with a career night at the plate while also providing consistent defense on the hot corner.

Lakewood starting pitcher Tyler Gilbert (1-3) matched his career-high with 7.0 innings of work, allowing two runs on four hits. He walked two and struck out four en route to his first win of the season. Jacob Waguespack tossed a scoreless eighth, and Robert Tasin worked around an unearned run for the save (5) in the ninth.

The BlueClaws scored runs in each of the first three innings to build an early lead. Lakewood jumped ahead, 1-0, in the top of the first when Josh Tobias drove the first pitch he saw off the top of the foul pole down the right field line for a solo home run (3). In the second inning, Damek Tomscha led off with a base hit and scored on a Grenny Cumana grounder for a 2-0 lead. After Kannapolis scored in the bottom of the second, Tobias walked and scored in the third, crossing the plate on a Tomscha grounder for a 3-1 lead. Lakewood added two unearned runs off reliever Brannon Easterling in the seventh.

Seby Zavala and Daily put Kannapolis on the board in the bottom of the second with back-to-back doubles to open the inning. Daily led off the top of the seventh with a triple and scored on an Antonio Rodriguez grounder to cut into the Lakewood lead, 5-2. Savala singled in the ninth and scored on a passed ball. Kannapolis brought the tying run to the plate in the final inning but could not get him on base.

Chris Comito (0-2) worked 5.0 innings, allowing three runs on five hits while striking out two and walking two while taking the loss in his second start at the Class A level.

The Intimidators hit the road for a 4-game series at Hagerstown starting on Thursday at 7:05 p.m. at Municipal Stadium as Kannapolis sends RHP Zach Thompson (2-2, 3.99 ERA) to the mound against the Suns' RHP Pedro Avila (1-1, 2.65 ERA). The games can be heard live with Erik Oas on the play-by-play via IntimidatorsBaseball.com or on the TuneIn App. The Intimidators return home for a 3-game home stand starting Monday, May 16, against the Greensboro Grasshoppers.
