Kannapolis, NC - Intimidators infielder Michael Johnson drew a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the 14th inning to lift Kannapolis to a 5-4 win over the Shorebirds at CMC-Northeast Stadium on Saturday. The Shorebirds have lost six straight games dating back to the end of the first half.

The Shorebirds grabbed a commanding four run lead in the third. Mychal Givens started the inning with a single. Then, Glynn Davis pushed a bunt towards second and forced a low throw by David Herbeck, advancing Givens to third. Mikey Planeta followed with a line drive off pitcher Matt Lane's leg to bring home Givens. Later in the inning, Jason Esposito hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Davis. With runners at second and third, Connor Narron pulled a single down the left field line to give the Shorebirds a 4-0 lead.

Kannapolis responded with two runs in the bottom of the third. Garis Pena reached on a single and moved to second on a wild pitch. Two batters later, Grant Buckner doubled to plate Pena. Kevan Smith followed with an RBI single to cut the deficit to 4-2.

Miguel Chalas went through the sixth inning for a fourth time this season. Chalas yielded seven hits and two runs and did not factor into the decision.

In the eighth inning, Martin Medina hit a line drive home run to left field that was originally ruled foul by the plate umpire, but overturned.

Kannapolis tied the game in the ninth on a single into center field by Grant Buckner off Eric Beaulac.

After Zach Fowler tossed 3.1 scoreless innings, the Shorebirds were forced to send position player Austin Knight to the mound in the 14th inning. Knight, who was making his professional pitching debut, struck out the first batter he faced. Then, he walked the next three. With the bases loaded and one out, Knight struck out Tillman Pugh. With two outs, he walked Michael Johnson to force home Leighton Pangilinan.

Fowler has not allowed an earned run in 19.0 consecutive innings over his last nine appearances. He has dropped his ERA from 11.25 to 1.96 during the stretch.

The Shorebirds did not score over the final 11 innings of the game. In five extra innings, the Shorebirds were held to just one hit.

The Shorebirds and Intimidators play the series finale on Sunday, June 24 at 5:05pm.
