The West Virginia Power fell 9-3 to the Lexington Legends on Sunday afternoon at Appalachian Power Park. The Legends used four home runs to build a lead the Power could not overcome and backed it with strong pitching to earn a split of the four game series.
In the second, Lexington got on the scoreboard first when Brandon Meredith hit a two-run home run to right off of West Virginia starter Zack Von Rosenberg. The Legends would add to their lead with a Jordan Scott two-run homer for a 4-0 advantage.
The Power could not get solid contact against Lexington's Nick Tropeano. The right-hander allowed just one hit over the first five innings, though he did surrender at least once base runner in each inning except the fifth.
Von Rosenberg pitched into the sixth inning and allowed back-to-back singles to Zach Johnson and Chan Jong Moon. Mike Kvasnicka hit a three-run home run for a 7-0 lead and knocked Von Rosenberg from the game. Lexington added a solo home run in the seventh and scored a run on two hits in the eighth against reliever Zac Fuesser for a 9-0 edge.
In the bottom of the ninth, the Power broke up the shutout with three runs on three hits, including a double by Jose Osuna that brought home a pair. Chris Lashmet drove in Osuna to end the scoring.
Von Rosenberg (0-2) took the loss after surrendering seven runs, all earned on eight hits and Tropeano (6-4) earned the win thanks to six complete shutout innings.
West Virginia travels to Lakewood to start a four game series on Monday evening at 7:05 pm. The road trip continues on Friday when the Power start of five-game set at Delmarva. West Virginia's next home game is scheduled for July 4 at 7:05 pm.
