Savannah Sand Gnats News Release
Savannah, GA - The Augusta GreenJackets no-hit the Sand Gnats into the seventh inning and then held on late for a 2-1 win. The 'Jackets (3-1/35-38) took three of four games from the Gnats (1-3/42-29) at Historic Grayson Stadium to begin the second half.
Savannah's Cam Maron took an 0-for-4, snapping his hitting streak at 16 straight games, tied for the second-longest streak in the South Atlantic League in 2012.
The Gnats handed the ball to LHP Jimmy Fuller on Sunday, making his first Savannah start since August 1, 2010. He was promoted to advanced-A and made five starts for the St. Lucie Mets in 2010, but missed the entire 2011 season following surgery on his labrum.
The GreenJackets scored the game's first run in the top of the second inning. With two outs and the bases empty, C Joe Staley blooped a single into shallow right field and then came around to scored on RF Brett Krill's double to the warning track in straight-away centerfield.
Augusta added a second run for a 2-0 cushion in the fourth. Fuller started the inning, but 1B Wes Hodges doubled down the left field line to chase Fuller, who had reached his pitch count, from the ballgame. 3B Garrett Buechele followed with an RBI single down the leftfield line.
Meanwhile, Augusta LHP Adalberto Mejia did not allow a hit through the first six innings, his longest outing of the 2012 season. He walked two Gnats and fanned five. However, he was lifted due to pitch count to begin the seventh. Reliever Andrew Berger entered trying to protect the no-hit bid.
The Gnats broke through for their first hits and only run in the bottom of the seventh. With one out LF Dustin Lawley drew a walk. 3B Aderlin Rodriguez then rolled a swinging bunt up the third base line that stopped in fair territory about halfway from home plate to the base for the Gnats' first hit. RF Gregory Pron followed with a clean single into right field to drive home Lawley with the Gnats' first run to make the score 2-1. After a botched rundown, Rodriguez, carrying the tying run, advanced to third and Lawley, with the go-ahead run, followed the play into second. However, C Xorge Carillo, in his first Savannah start, struck out to strand the runners at second and third.
Down 2-1, the Gnats put a runner aboard in both the eighth and ninth innings, but could not find the game-tying hit.
The Gnats begin a nine-game road trip to Charleston and Augusta on Monday.
Savannah returns home to begin a five game homestand on Wednesday, July 4th. The Gnats' Fireworks Spectacular will be the second-best show in town, but the only one that comes with a guaranteed seat!
