Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Savannah, GA - Adalberto Mejia stole the show on Sunday afternoon in Savannah, firing six no-hit innings as the Augusta GreenJackets held on to take three of four from the Savannah Sand Gnats with a 2-1 win.
Mejia (5-4) retired 18 of the 20 hitters he faced in what was easily his best start of the year and maybe his entire career. In six scoreless, no-hit innings, Mejia walked two - the lone blemishes on his record in the game - and struck out five.
The GreenJackets scored first for the third time in the series - putting up a run in the second on Brett Krill's two-out RBI double, one of his four hits in the game. In all four games of the series, the team that scored first ended up getting the win. Augusta added another run in the fourth on Garrett Buechele's run-scoring single to give the GreenJackets a 2-0 lead.
The no-hit bid was boosted by two great defensive plays in the sixth inning. Buechele barehanded a dribbler up the third base line and delivered a strong throw to first to provide the inning's first out. Then a drive to left-center was snagged by Elliott Blair on a leaping, diving catch into the gap to preserve the no-hitter.
Mejia left after the sixth inning - his longest outing of the year by two full innings - handing the baton of the no-hit bid to Andrew Berger. After Berger got the first out of the inning, he walked Dustin Lawley. Aderlin Rodriguez followed with a dribbler up the first base line that Berger couldn't make a play on to break up Augusta's no-hit bid. Later in the inning, Greg Pron delivered a two-out single to bring Savannah's first run of the game and put the tying and go-ahead runs on the basepaths. But Berger recovered to strike out Savannah catcher Xorge Carrillo to hold the one-run lead for the GreenJackets.
Savannah would have other chances to tie the game in the late innings. An eighth inning double play wiped off a leadoff single while Rodriguez reached on a two-out Augusta error in the ninth. Kyle Vazquez settled down to get Brian Harrison to fly out to center to end the game and preserve his fourth save of the season.
In his first appearance since 2010 as a result of surgery to repair a torn labrum, Jimmy Fuller (0-1) took the loss for the Sand Gants. He allowed two runs on five hits in three innings, striking out a pair.
The GreenJackets picked up their third one-run win of the series and their 18th this season - a league-leading total. They'll return home on Monday to open their longest homestand of the year with the first of a four-game set against the Asheville Tourists. Augusta sends Edwin Escobar (2-4, 3.77) to the mound in the opener against Asheville's Danny Winkler (8-4, 4.77). First pitch comes at 7:05 p.m. with radio pregame coverage beginning at 6:50 p.m. on ESPN Radio 1340 AM and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
