Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
Greensboro, NC - The Delmarva Shorebirds lost their final road game of the season by a final score of 6-1 to the Greensboro Grasshoppers. The loss on Wednesday night was the 70th of the year for Delmarva, dashing the Shorebirds' hopes for their first winning record since 2008.
Luis Gonzalez continued to struggle in the month of August with another poor start. Once again, the lefty allowed a first-inning rally. Greensboro scored five runs off the Shorebirds' starter in the opening frame. Since being named organizational Pitcher of the Month in July, Gonzalez has now allowed 26 runs in 15 innings pitched in August.
Delmarva's lone run came in the third inning, starting with a leadoff single by Tanner Rust. A key error committed by Jarlin Garcia allowed Anthony Vega to move up to second base on a wild pickoff throw. Josh Hart drove home the run on a line drive single to center field.
The Shorebirds bullpen pitched well in relief of Gonzalez. Williams Louico tossed one scoreless inning of relief, while Nik Nowottnick did not allow a base hit in his two clean innings. The offense though could not get going against a trio of Grasshoppers relievers. Delmarva collected just two hits in the final four innings.
Jarlin Garcia earned the win for Greensboro, his 10th of the season. Luis Gonzalez suffered his fourth straight loss after starting 6-0 with Delmarva.
Delmarva returns home for the final weekend of the season. The Shorebirds will host the Hickory Crawdads for a four-game series to finish the year. Left-hander Bennett Parry (1-3, 2.76) starts for Delmarva against Hickory right-hander David Ledbetter (6-7, 5.80). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.
