Greenville Drive News Release
Greenville, SC - During his time with the Greenville Drive this season, Carlos Asuaje did a little bit of everything. He played four different positions in the field extremely well, posted standout offensive numbers and was an SAL Midseason All-Star selection. He can add another All-Star selection to his list of accomplishments, as he was chosed to the 2014 South Atlantic League Annual All-Star team, league president Eric Krupa announced on Thursday.
Asuaje becomes the fourth Drive player selected to the league's Annual All-Star team, joining outfielders Jeremy Hazelbaker (2010), Brandon Jacobs (2011) and Keury De la Cruz (2012). Asuaje also joins Jacobs and De la Cruz as the third Drive player to be named to both the South Atlantic League Midseason and Annual All-Star teams.
The All-Star team is voted on by the Field Managers, Coaches, General Managers, Media Relations Directors and Broadcasters of the 14 South Atlantic League teams.
"Carlos was outstanding for the three-plus months he was with us here in Greenville, and is very much deserving of this recognition as one of the South Atlantic League's best players," said Drive Manager Darren Fenster. "Having seen time at four different positions in the field, his versatility gave us an invaluable piece in our everyday lineup who made everyone around him better."
"The competitiveness and work ethic he brought to the field on a daily basis, coupled with his feel for the game, helped make him an incredibly clutch and productive player, and it was a pleasure having him as long as we did."
Asuaje's second season in the Red Sox organization was a huge breakout campaign for the 22-year old, an 11th round selection out of Nova Southeastern (FL) University in 2013. He was promoted to the Salem Red Sox on July 19th, and his final numbers with the Drive see him ranked at or among the South Atlantic League leaderboard in average (10th, .305), on-base percentage (2nd, .391), slugging percentage (1st, .542) and triples (T-1st, 10).
In addition, Asuaje is leading the Drive in homers (11) and RBI (73) while sitting among the team leaders in runs (2nd, 59), doubles (T-2nd, 24) and walks (4th, 41).
He also showed off his versatility, starting games at third base (36), second base (23), left field (14) and shortstop (6).
"The selection of Carlos as a South Atlantic League All-Star is well-deserved, as he has put together an outstanding season," commented Drive General Manager Eric Jarinko. "Carlos is another example of the quality of the Red Sox player development team, as they continue to draft, sign and develop outstanding talent from all over the world. We look forward to watching Carlos as he continues to move up the ladder and eventually reach the major leagues."
The Drive open up their final homestand of the 2014 season on Friday night at 7:05 against the Lexington Legends. To purchase tickets, stop by the Main Street Box Office, call (864) 240-4528 or log onto GreenvilleDrive.com.
