Kannapolis, N.C. - Jarret Martin lasted a career long seven innings to lead the Delmarva Shorebirds to a 5-3 win over the Kannapolis Intimidators on Wednesday night at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium. Martin fanned a career best nine batters to lift the Shorebirds to their first win since June 6.
With Kannapolis leading 3-2 in the seventh inning, the Shorebirds scored three runs to take a 5-3 lead. Kannapolis committed three separate errors in the inning to help the Shorebirds. With the bases loaded and two outs, Mikey Planeta hit a hard grounder to first that went below the glove of Dan Black and down the right field line to score two runs to give the 'Birds the lead.
D.J. Ferguson maneuvered out of a bases loaded jam in the eighth inning and David Walters locked away his 17th save of the season in the ninth inning.
Martin allowed only five hits to earn his third win of the season. The only inning in which he allowed runs was the third inning when Juan Silverio and Trayce Thompson connected on home runs.
The Shorebirds travel to Hagerstown, Maryland for game one of a doubleheader at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday night. LHP Jacob Pettit is the scheduled starter for game one.
