Tonight: The First-Half Champion Gnats finish a four-game series and a seven-game home stand against the Rome Braves. The Gnats, who have won seven games in a row, are 12 games over .500 for the first time in 2011 and own the League's best record.
Last Night: The Gnats clinched their second-straight First-Half Championship with a 2-1 win over the Rome Braves. The Gnats scored a pair of runs in the second inning and starter Gonzalez Germen and closer Josh Edgin made it stand up. Germen held the Braves to one run in seven innings and closer Edgin collected the final six outs for his 16th save of the year.
Now Pitching: RHP Greg Peavey, who is 9th in the SAL in ERA (3.13), is scheduled to make his 14th start tonight. Peavey has the third-lowest unintentional walk rate among starters in the South Atlantic League with just 1.38 BB-IBB/9 IP (11 BB/72 IP). Peavey has walked four batters in his last eight starts, a span of 48 innings. The Mets drafted Peavey in the 6thround in 2010 out of Oregon State. As a Beaver in 2010, Peavey was an All-Pac-10 Honorable Mention and a two-time conference Player of the Week. Peavey had been drafted twice before: in the 24th round in 2007 out of Hudson's Bay High School by the New York Yankees and in the 32nd round in 2009 by the Houston Astros. In high school, he was named Washington's Class 3A baseball Player of the Year in 2007. Peavey had national-level success before high school, helping the Hazel Dell Metro Little League team to the Little League World Series in 2000, and the Hazel Dell Metro Babe Ruth Championship teams in 2001 and 2002. The Gnats are 7-6 when Peavey starts and have supported him with 4.9 runs per game, the most of any Savannah starter.
Playoff History: The Gnats are heading to the playoffs for the second consecutive season. The Savannah franchise last went to the playoffs in consecutive years in 1993 and 1994, when the Savannah Cardinals won the Southern Division and the League Championship both years. Savannah won the SAL Championship in 1996 and then did not make the playoffs until the Gnats won the 2010 first half championship.
Transactions: SS/2B Robbie Shields and closer Josh Edgin were both transferred to advanced-A St. Lucie Wednesday. Edgin, who was tied for the league lead in saves (16) had recorded saves in 10 of the Gnats' last 14 wins. Shields was tied for the SAL lead with 20 doubles. Jet Butler who played first, second, third base, shortstop and a game in right field for Savannah over a span of 40 games with Savannah in 2010 was transferred from the Brooklyn roster.
Hot Like the Weather: The Gnats have won seven games in a row for the first time as a Mets affiliate and have won 19 of 23 games, an .826 winning percentage. Since slipping to 7-14 after April 29, the Gnats are 31-12, a .721 winning percentage.
Playoff Schedule: The Gnats will have home field advantage in the best-of-three Southern Division Championship Series which will begin at the home of the Second Half Champion on Wednesday, September 7 and then return to Savannah on Friday, September 9 for game two and, if necessary, game three on Saturday, September 10.
Strong Arms: The Gnats have the SAL's best ERA (3.09), and have the best WHIP (1.22), and are fourth in strikeouts (548) and have allowed the second-fewest hits (508) in the League.
Vs. Rome: The Gnats are 8-3 against the Rome Braves in 2011, 5-2 at home and 3-1 on the road.
