Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Augusta, GA - The Augusta GreenJackets had chances late but stranded key runners and were held to just four hits in a 2-1 loss to the Lexington Legends on Wednesday afternoon at Lake Olmstead Stadium. With the Augusta loss, Lexington salvages the series split with the GreenJackets.
Mike Kvasnicka's two-out RBI single in the fourth inning put the Legends up 1-0 off Gaspar Santiago, who retired the first nine hitters he faced before hitting trouble in the fourth. Santiago (1-3) threw five innings and allowed a run on three hits and two walks while striking out six - a new season-high.
The first of two chances for the GreenJackets to tie or lead the game came with one out in the bottom of the sixth. Trailing 1-0, Augusta had Chris Lofton at third after a double and a passed ball and Carlos Willoughby at first following a walk. Raynor Campbell bounced into an inning-ending double play to squash the threat.
After Jiovanni Mier's RBI single made it a 2-0 Legends lead in the seventh, Augusta's second golden opportunity came in the bottom half of that inning. With a run already home in the inning on Rafael Rodriguez's sacrifice fly, the GreenJackets had the tying run at second and the go-ahead run at first with two outs. Devin Harris struck out swinging to leave the men on the basepaths and bring the rally to a close.
The GreenJackets were retired in order in each of the last two innings, but not without intrigue. Leading off the ninth, Adam Duvall - who'd homered in each of the first three games of the series - hit a long drive to left that was caught at the wall for the inning's first out. Jorge DeLeon set down the next two hitters to earn his eighth save of the year.
Lexington starter Ruben Alaniz (5-4) earned his third straight win in his longest start of the year - 6.2 innings. Alaniz allowed a run on four hits and three walks while striking out one.
The GreenJackets welcome the Asheville Tourists to town for the opener of a four-game series on Thursday, facing a Tourists team that boasts former Clemson quarterback Kyle Parker on the roster. Augusta sends Shawn Sanford (3-5, 2.70) to the mound while the Tourists counter with lefty Tyler Matzek (0-1, 7.04). It'll be another Thirsty Thursday, presented by 95 Rock and The Vue Lounge, with dollar domestic drafts and soft drinks available throughout the night. First pitch will come at 7:05 with pregame coverage beginning at 6:50, airing online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com .
Single-game tickets are currently available by calling the GreenJackets front office at 706-922-WINS while further information can be found online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com .
