Charleston RiverDogs News Release
CHARLESTON, S.C. - Miles Head's two-run double keyed a four-run fourth inning, as the Greenville Drive downed the Charleston RiverDogs, 5-3, in South Atlantic League action Wednesday night in front of a crowd of 3,233 fans at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.
Greenville secured a series victory in improving to 34-32, while Charleston dropped its third straight to fall to 25-41.
Chris Martin (4-0) spun 4.0 innings on one-run ball out of the Drive bullpen to garner the victory.
Charleston starter Shane Greene (2-7) danced in and out of trouble to strand two runners in the first inning, but could not escape the second unscathed.
Xander Bogaerts, David Renfroe, stroked consecutive singles, and Leonel Escobar reached on an error to load the bases. Felix Sanchez stepped to the dish next and narrowly beat out a double play ball to give Greenville a 1-0 lead.
Rob Segedin knotted the tally with one swing of the bat off Kyle Stroup in the last of the third inning. The RiverDogs' leading hitter belted a towering drive over the left field wall for his fourth home run of the season. Gary Sanchez poked an opposite field double to extend the threat, and eventually plated the go-ahead run on a Jose Mojica RBI groundout.
Greenville scored four times on four base knocks and two Charleston errors to move ahead, 5-2, in the top of the fourth inning.
Henry Ramos legged out an infield single to lead off the frame, and came around to score when Bogaerts singled to right field and De Leon couldn't handle the ball cleanly. Bogaerts advanced to third on the De Leon miscue, and came down the line himself when Anderson Feliz's relay throw sailed into the stands.
Greene struck out Sanchez and had a chance to get out of the inning with the deficit at a single run, but Jose Garcia walked and Miles Head smoked a two-run double over the head of Mike Ferraro in left field for a 5-2 Drive advantage.
The RiverDogs started their journey on the comeback trail against Martin, who entered in relief after Stroup left with an apparent arm injury.
Mojica cracked a double to start the fifth inning, and scurried home to score when Feliz grounded into a double play, making the score 5-3.
Kramer Sneed emerged out of the Charleston bullpen to start the seventh, relieving Greene, who scattered nine hits and the five runs (four earned) over 6.0 innings. The 6-4 Daytona State College product had solid command of his fastball and slider, fanning four and walking only two batters.
Martin showcased his strikeout stuff over his four frames of work, fanning a career high four batters while scattering five hits and a walk.
Justin Erasmus slammed the door shut for the Drive in the ninth, recording his first save of the campaign by retiring the side in order.
