Shorebirds Down The RiverDogs, 2-0
May 1, 2011 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Charleston RiverDogs News Release
DELMARVA, MD. - Jacob Pettit penned 8.0 scoreless innings, and Manny Machado homered for the second consecutive night to power the Delmarva Shorebirds over the Charleston RiverDogs, 2-0, in South Atlantic League action Sunday afternoon in front of a crowd of 1,712 fans at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.
Delmarva improved to 15-9 with its tenth consecutive victory, while Charleston dropped its fourth straight to fall to 10-14.
Pettit (3-0) was in control from the outset, allowing only a walk through the first three innings. J.R. Murphy doubled to the opposite field for Charleston's first base hit in the fourth, but Pettit turned aside Gary Sanchez and Rob Segedin to keep the RiverDogs off the scoreboard.
Charleston's Kramer Sneed (1-3) matched Pettit zero-for-zero until the bottom of third, when Delmarva made a lighting quick strike with two outs to grab a 2-0 lead.
Jonathan Schoop legged out an infield single as Segedin could not make an accurate throw to first after a great diving stop. That extended the inning for Machado, who homered for the second time in as many nights to stake Pettit to a 2-0 advantage.
The RiverDogs forged another rally in the fifth, but ran into some bad luck to help Pettit escape the frame unscathed. Kyle Roller was hit by a pitch, and Eduardo Sosa singled to put runners at first and second with one out for the streaking Jose Mojica. Mojica turned on a Pettit offering but lined it straight into the glove of Schoop at third for the second out. Schoop then calmly threw to second to double off Roller and end the threat.
Sneed was excellent in 6.0 innings of work, retiring the last four men he faced. The 6-3 southpaw permitted two runs while scattering six hits and a walk, striking out four along the way.
Pettit was simply sensational for the Shorebirds, establishing career-highs in innings pitched and strikeouts. The 24-year old hurler penned 8.0 scoreless innings, yielding just five hits and a walk while fanning eight.
David Walters entered in relief of Pettit in the ninth and surrendered a one-out double to Sanchez, giving the RiverDogs two cracks with the tying run in the box. Walters slammed the door shut, though, retiring Segedin on a groundout before fanning Roller looking for the final out. The Francis Marion product upped his SAL leading save total to eight.
The RiverDogs and Shorebirds meet again in the third of the four-game set, Monday at 7:05 pm. Right-hander Zach Nuding (3-0, 3.54 ERA) strives to continue his hot-hand for Charleston, while right-hander Scott Copeland (1-0, 3.97) is expected to toe the rubber for Delmarva.
