Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
HICKORY, N.C. (May 1, 2011) - The Kannapolis Intimidators struck out 13 times in another one-run loss to the Hickory Crawdads, 4-3, on Sunday at L.P. Frans Stadium.
Hickory starter Justin Grimm (2-0) frustrated Intimidators hitters through seven innings pitched, striking out 11 batters with no walks to earn the win. The frustration boiled over on called strikeouts against Trayce Thompson in the sixth and Juan Silverio in the seventh, as both players were ejected for arguing balls and strikes.
Kannapolis struck first in the top of the second. C Mike Blanke singled and advanced to second base on a wild pitch. 1B Dan Black smacked his 11th double of the season to drive in Blanke, and scored two batters later on 2B Drew Lee's sacrifice fly for a 2-0 lead.
Hickory responded with three runs in the bottom of the second, following a walk to Josh Richmond with four consecutive singles off Intimidators starter RHP Jake Petricka for a 3-2 advantage, highlighted by Kellin Deglan's two-run single.
Petricka (2-1) took his first loss of the season, surrendering four runs on nine hits in five innings of work. Kevin Moran tossed three scoreless innings of relief, allowing two hits while striking out four batters.
The Crawdads are now 2.5 games ahead of the Intimidators for first place in the South Atlantic League Northern Division standings.
The Intimidators and Crawdads continue the series on Monday at 7:00 p.m. at L.P. Frans Stadium. Paul Burnside (2-0, 4.67) will make his first start of the season for Kannapolis, and Matt Thompson (0-2, 5.12) will toe the rubber for Hickory.
