Selik's Pitching Prowess Sends Suns to Series Opening Win

Hagerstown Suns News Release

Rome, GA- The Hagerstown Suns (14-9) have certainly been locked in against the Rome Braves (6-17) in the young 2011 season. After sweeping the Braves in the '11 opening series, the Suns took Game One of their four-game set with Rome at State Mutual Stadium on Saturday night by a score of 4-2. After taking three of five from the West Virginia Power, the Suns made it three consecutive wins with a triumph over the Braves.

Suns RHP Cameron Selik (3-0), the winning pitcher of record, carried a 26-inning scoreless innings streak into the 4th inning and with two outs gave up a bloop base hit to right field off the bat of LF Robby Hefflinger scoring C Christian Bethancourt, who singled. DH Jakob Dalfonso, also trying to score, was cut down at the plate by a stellar one-hop throw from Suns RF Michael Taylor. The line drive throw was Taylor's first outfield assist of the season.

LHP Steven Kent (1-3), the losing pitcher, pitched a quality start but it was not enough to garner the victory. Kent went 7.0 innings and allowed three earned runs on seven hits, while striking out seven.

Kent allowed an RBI single to SS Jason Martinson in the top of the 4th frame, allowing the Suns to strike first. Later, he would surrender a solo home run to RF Bryce Harper, who launched his sixth long ball of the season over the right field fence. The lazer beam homer was typical of Harper, a tomahawked blast onto the home run hill in right field that left the field of play in a hurry.

The Braves supplemented their first run with one tally in the bottom of the 8th inning as Bethancourt lofted an RBI sacrifice fly to Taylor in right field scoring '10 first round draft pick, SS Matt Lipka, who singled. However, it was too little, too late for the home club as Hagerstown would again see solid bullpen work from a right-handed stopper.

Hagerstown RHP Sam Brown (2 SV) would toss the final third of the game and garner his second save of the season, surrendering just one walk and one earned run on one base hit.

The Suns will be hosted by the Braves for Game Two on Sunday at State Mutual Stadium. First pitch is slated for 2:00pm. Live broadcast coverage of the Hagerstown Suns will be available on the Hagerstown Suns Baseball Network provided by MiLB.com and is scheduled to begin at 1:45pm.
