Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Lexington, KY - A ninth inning Augusta rally fell short as Josh Mazzola grounded out with two men on base to end a 5-4 loss to the Lexington Legends on Sunday afternoon in Lexington.
Trailing by two in the ninth inning, Rafael Rodriguez doubled into the right field corner to extend his hitting streak to ten games. Ydwin Villegas followed with a single to right to put men at the corners. After Jorge DeLeon retired the next two hitters, Ryan Scoma's two-out double to right brought home a run and cut the deficit to one. With two on, Mazzola's chopper to short ended the game and gave the Legends the win.
Lexington jumped out to an early lead with three runs in the first on an RBI double by Adam Bailey, a Mike Kvasnicka run-scoring single and a sacrifice fly from Daniel Adamson to give the Legends a 3-0 lead. Devin Harris answered in the second with a solo home run over the out-of-town scoreboard in left-center to bring the Jackets back to within two.
In the third, the Legends scored two more on RBI singles by Kvasnicka and Adamson to stretch the lead to four runs. Adam Duvall cut the lead in half in the fourth inning with a towering two-run home run down the left field line to make it a 5-3 game. In addition to ending the game with his ninth inning groundout, Mazzola left two on in the fifth and two more in the seventh as the GreenJackets had those additional opportunities to tie or take the lead in the game.
Justin Schumer struggled early, but held on to deliver six innings for the GreenJackets in the matinee loss. Schumer (2-2) allowed five runs on 11 hits and a walk with three strikeouts. His counterpart Tanner Bushue (4-0) survived his own struggles through five innings to stay undefeated on the season. Bushue allowed three runs on eight hits, striking out three. De Leon struck out two in the final two innings to earn his second save of the year.
Two lefties face off in the third game of the series as Mario Rodriguez (0-1, 4.07) takes the mound for Augusta to face Brad Dydalewicz (0-3, 6.62). First pitch will come at 7:05 in Lexington with the pregame action beginning at 6:50, airing on WRDW-AM 1630 and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
