Shorebirds Defeat Captains, 10-3

(Salisbury, MD)—The Delmarva Shorebirds pounded five doubles among 10 hits Monday, and rolled to a 10-3 win over the Lake County Captains at Perdue Stadium.

The Shorebirds (29-36) also took advantage of eight walks from four Captains pitchers to win their second straight over Lake County (37-28).

The Captains remained three games behind first-place Lexington, who lost to Hagerstown 10-9. Hagerstown is now in second place, two games out of first, and one game ahead of the Captains.

Delmarva's Gary Cates, who started the season at double-A Bowie of the Eastern League, went 3-5, with two doubles and three runs scored. Cates also took a hit away from Brian Finegan with a diving stop at second in the fifth inning.

The Captains took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a solo homer by Brian Barton, his fourth of the season. Barton, the SAL Batter of the Week, finished 3-5 on the night.

The Shorebirds rallied against starter Cody Bunkelman in the third to take a 3-1 lead. Francisco Guerrero led off with a walk, and Cates had an infield hit. Eric Grimm followed with a double to center to score two runs. Jason Fransz later drove in Grimm with a grounder.

The Captains tied it 3-3 in the fifth when Juan Valdes singled, and moved to third on a double by Argenis Reyes. Both Valdes and Reyes scored when Mike Butia's grounder was misplayed by Grimm.

Two Captains errors led to two unearned runs against Bunkelman (0-1) in the fifth, and then Delmarva sent 10 men to the plate in the sixth, taking advantage of three doubles and back-to-back bases-loaded walks by Brandon Rickert and T.J. Burton to take a 9-3 lead.

Russ Petrick (4-3) worked 1 1/3 innings to pick up the win. He entered the game with two outs in the fifth in relief of starter Dennis Robinson and stranded two Captains runners on base. The Captains left 11 on in the game.

The Captains have gone 2-17 with runners in scoring position in the last two games, including 0-7 on Monday.

The Captains will play the wrap-up of the series and road trip at 1:35 on Tuesday afternoon (WELW AM 1330).
