Savannah Sand Gnats News Release
SAVANNAH, Ga. â Recently, hits for the Gnats have been harder to come by than dry afternoons in Savannah. Following another soggy day, the skies cleared, the humidity disappeared and The Savannah Nine and Greensboro Grasshoppers locked up in a tight pitcher's dual at the Old Ballyard.
Southpaw Savannah starter Ricardo Morales hurled six scoreless frames and allowed Greensboro only two base knocks. Unfortunately for Savannah, his counterpart Greensboro's Jose Garcia, was equally stingy shutting out the Gnats on a single hit over 6.2 innings of work.
At the end of regulation with the matter still not settled, the 800 in attendance at Historic Grayson Stadium hunkered down for some free baseball. Savannah fireman Brett Campbell set down the side in the top of tenth, setting the table for some hometown heroics.
Right fielder Doug Vroman walked to lead off the bottom of the tenth. With one out, both Steve Mortimer and Devin Ivany reached base on errors, loading the bases for Saturday night's hero Trey Webb.
Webb, who knocked in the Gnats winning run in the bottom of the ninth in the first game of the series, knocked a seeing-eye base hit just out of the reach of third baseman Jonathan Fulton. Vroman scampered home giving Savannah the victory.
Savannah and Greensboro face off in the final game of their four-game set Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. at Historic Grayson Stadium. It will be the final night of Sand Gnats Survivor at Grayson Stadium and either Pete or Shannon will win Gnats tickets for life.
The Gnats return to the First City for a three-game set against the first-place Charleston RiverDogs June 21-23. For tickets log onto www.sandgnats.com or call 912-351-9150 during regular business hours.
