Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
Salisbury, MD (May 7, 2009) - The Delmarva Shorebirds held the West Virginia Power to just four hits on Thursday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium, as the Power suffered their fourth shutout loss of the season, losing the third game of the series 4-0.
West Virginia left seven men on base, and five in scoring position. In the third inning they had runners on second and third with only one out and the top of the order coming up, but Ryan O'Shea worked his way out of the jam, inducing a fly ball out from Austin McClune and then struck out Quincy Latimore to end the inning. The Power left runners at the corners in the fourth, before stranding runners on first and second in the fifth and Adenson Chourio was stranded at second base in the seventh.
Joe Mahoney's RBI double in the first inning plated Delmarva's first run of the night. Tyler Kolodny started the fourth inning with a base hit and eventually scored on a wild pitch. Xavier Avery started the fifth inning with his first of two triples on the night and scored on Ron Welty's sacrifice fly. The Shorebirds scored their final run of the evening in the eighth when Kolodny came in on a run scoring single from L.J. Hoes.
O'Shea (2-1) tossed seven scoreless innings of four hit ball to earn the victory for Delmarva and struck out four batters in the process. Patrick Egan retired all six batters he faced in his two innings of relief to secure his first save of the season. Duke Welker (0-3) was tagged with the loss after allowing three runs, two earned on five hits with three strikeouts in five innings of work.
West Virginia fell to 7-19 with the loss, and the Shorebirds improved to 14-10 with the victory. Quincy Latimore went 1-for-4, extending his hitting streak to five games, and his on base streak to seven. Calvin Anderson went 0-for-4, bringing his hitting streak to an end at six games. Adenson Chourio paced the Power, going 2-for-2 and reached in all three plate appearances. A brief rain shower suspended the game for 22 minutes in the bottom of the second inning.
West Virginia will finish the four game series against the Delmarva Shorebirds at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium on Friday night. Left hander Tyler Cox (0-3, 9.50) will start for West Virginia and the Shorebirds will counter with left hander Nathan Moreau (0-0, 0.00). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
