Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release
LAKEWOOD, NJ - For the last 11 games, the Lakewood BlueClaws have alternated wins and losses. Thursday was no different as the BlueClaws won 2-0, thanks to an outstanding pitching performance by Tyler Cloyd. The win allows the BlueClaws to hop their opponents, the Kannapolis Intimidators, in the standings.
The starting pitchers, Tyler Cloyd (2-2) and Greg Infante were both the Opening Day starters for both the BlueClaws (15-11) and the Intimidators (15-12) and a pitcher's duel was expected as there were no runs through the first five and a half innings of play.
Tyler Cloyd held the Intimidators off the scoreboard with eight strikeouts, but more so, his ability to induce ground balls. With runners on first and third in the fourth, Cloyd got the cleanup hitter Jorge Castillo to ground back to the mound and the 1-6-3 double play ended the threat. He also scored a double play in the sixth with a runner trying to steal third; Cloyd struck Sergio Morales out and caught Eduardo Escobar stealing third.
The BlueClaws got their breakthrough in the sixth with Anthony Gose on second after a single and a steal, and Jim Murphy took a pitch to deep right field that one-hopped the wall and brought Gose home to make it 1-0.
In the very next inning, off of reliever Charlis Burdie, the BlueClaws got their second run of the game as Troy Hanzawa walked to lead off the inning, he was sacrificed to second by Jeremy Hamilton and he scored on a single by Harold Garcia.
After the fantastic start by Cloyd, the deepest any starter has gone this season, Ryan Bergh came on for the save in the ninth and allowed two baserunners but escaped without allowing a run in the team's second shutout of the season.
Infante (2-1), took the loss despite pitching six innings and only allowing four hits and one run. He was relieved by Burdie, who allowed his second run of the season in the seventh in his 16th inning of work this season.
The BlueClaws lead the four-game series 2-1 and the series will conclude on Friday at 7:05 pm. At four games over .500, the BlueClaws have tied their best mark this season and are 0-5 in attempts to make it five games over .500. They will send top pitching prospect Jason Knapp (2-2) to the mound to try and do that task. He will be opposed by righty Steve Sauer (1-2).
