Hickory Crawdads News Release

LAKE COUNTY, Ohio. - The Hickory Crawdads fell, 14-6, to the Lake County Captains before 5,827 fans at Classic Park in Lake County on Thursday.

The Captains (11-14) jumped out to an 8-0 lead through the first four innings, with all eight tallies being charged to LHP Cliff Springston (2-2). Springston was relieved on the mound with one out in the fourth inning by RHP Fabio Castillo with two on. Castillo gave up a two-run single to the first batter he faced, but then settled down and got out of the inning with a pair of strikeouts. Castillo ended up tossing 2.2 innings, without allowing a run of his own to score, giving up just two hits with one walk and four strikeouts to hold Lake County at eight runs.

The Crawdads (13-13) cut the Lake County lead in half with four runs put up in the top of the fifth inning, making it 8-4. C Doug Hogan, coming off a two-hit game on Tuesday, started the frame with a solo home run, his fourth of the year, to get the Crawdads on the board. The next batter, 1B Clark Murphy, hit a line drive right up the middle for a single, and moved to second on a CF David Paisano base hit with one out. 2B Jake Kaase then cleared the bases with a three-run shot over the left-center field wall, for his second homer of the season and the Crawdads second of the inning, to complete the Crawdads four-run rally. After Kaase's homer, RHP Joey Mahalic was replaced on the mound by RHP Mike McGuire, who navigated through the remainder of the inning in scoreless fashion.

After Castillo and McGuire exchanged scoreless innings in the sixth, Lake County put up six runs in the bottom of the seventh, facing RHP Ryan Schlecht, who started the inning on the mound. RHP Cody Eppley came in with two outs and the bases loaded, and gave up a three-run triple to RF Abner Abreu before getting out of the inning, which left Lake County in a 14-4 lead, with all six tallies charged to Schlecht.

After McGuire hit RF Mike Bianucci in the head with a fastball to start the top of the eighth inning, leading to a lengthy delay as both benches cleared, the Crawdads inched closer with a run on a DH/3B Erik Morrison RBI double, to make it 14-5. Hickory added another run in the top of the ninth, but it proved to be not enough, as the Captains went on to win 14-6. Springston was tagged with the loss, while McGuire earned the win for Lake County.
