Lexington Legends News Release

The Rome Braves, behind the strong pitching of starter Jacob Thompson, defeated the Lexington Legends 4-2 in the opener of a four-game series in Rome.

Thompson (W, 1-2) pitched eight innings, allowed five hits, two runs, walked no one, and struck out six. Jaye Chapman retired the Legends in order in the ninth to get his first save.

Rome took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning against Lexington starter Kyle Greenwalt (L, 2-2) when Samuel Sime and Calvin Culver singled. A wild pitch on a third strike to Braeden Schlehuber allowed both Sime and Culver to advance. Chris Shehan's sacrifice fly scored Sime from third.

The Legends took the lead in the third inning. After singles by Ebert Rosario and Andy Simunic, Jay Austin grounded to first, moving the runners to second and third. Ricardo Bonfante brought Rosario home with a sacrifice fly to tie the score, and Brandon Barnes tripled to center field, scoring Simunic and giving Lexington a 2-1 lead.

The Braves regained the lead for good in the bottom of the third. Joel Campusano, who had three hits in the game, doubled to left. Luis Sumoza was hit by a pitch, and after Gerry Rodriguez and Stephen Shults struck out, Sime's double brought home two runs to put Rome in front 3-2. The Braves added a run in the fourth on Campusano's RBI single.

The series continues with a 10:30 a.m. game Thursday. Right-hander Jordan Lyles will pitch for Lexington against left-hander Brett DeVall.
