Kane County Cougars News Release

Geneva, IL - The Kane County Cougars nailed down their first shutout of the season on Monday night, beating the defending league-champion South Bend Silver Hawks 4-0 behind seven strong innings from starter Trey Shields and two relief frames from Dan Fyvie. First baseman Steve Kleen had three hits, two of which were doubles, and three RBIs to lead the offense.

Kane County got on the board in the third against South Bend starter Eduardo Baeza. Justin Sellers walked and stole second, Frank Martinez drew a free pass with two outs and Jeff Baisley singled home Sellers for a 1-0 affair. Kleen followed with a two-run double to the warning track to plate both runners and put the Cougars ahead 3-0.

That turned out to be plenty of support for Shields (2-1), who scattered six hits, walked two and fanned seven in his victorious seven-inning effort. Dan Fyvie tossed a scoreless eighth, and Kleen drove in Baisley after an error in the bottom half for the 4-0 final. Fyvie worked a 1-2-3 ninth for his first save of the year. Baeza (1-1) suffered the loss. The Cougars (7-4) have won five of their last seven games and send Vince Mazzaro (1-0, 6.30) to the mound Tuesday at noon for game two against Anthony Cupps (0-1, 20.65) for South Bend (5-7).
