Rangers First Rounder Mayberry Comes to Clinton
April 17, 2006 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Clinton LumberKings News Release
Clinton, IA -Texas Rangers first round draft pick John Mayberry will join the roster of the Clinton LumberKings today after opening the season on the disabled list. Mayberry, the 19th overall pick in the June 2005 draft, will be added to the 25-man roster as the fifth outfielder.
The 22-year-old Mayberry started his professional career last season with Spokane. He hit .253 in 71 games, launching 11 homers, good for 3rd best in the Northwest League. Mayberry also plated 26 RBI's and scored 51 runs. He averaged a home run roughly every 24 at-bats for the short-season Indians.
Baseball America ranks Mayberry as the 10th best prospect in the Texas Rangers' organization. His father was a fellow first round draft pick and two-time Major League All-Star with the Kansas City Royals in 1973 and '74.
Mayberry's addition means an exit for utility infielder/outfielder Joey Hooft. Hooft was 0-for-14 at the plate in four games with one stolen base. He also appeared as a relief pitcher, recording 2/3 scoreless innings in the 16-3 blowout loss to Kane County on April 14th.
