Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
Quad Cities cannot overcome 6-1 deficit, commit four more errors
The Swing of the Quad Cities committed four errors that led to four unearned runs on Monday night at John O'Donnell Stadium, dropping the series opener to the Dayton Dragons, 6-3. The Swing have now been charged with ten miscues over the past two games, and 23 through 11 games this season.
The Swing drop to 6-5 with the loss, while Dayton improved to 3-8 with their first road win in four attempts this season.
Dayton attacked the scoreboard early and often, scoring two runs in the top of the first on the strength of two hits, a walk and two errors. The Dragons added single runs in the second and third innings, before a long two-run home run by Jay Bruce in the fourth made it a 6-1 game.
Trailing 2-0, the Swing scored an unearned run of their own in the bottom of the first. Colby Rasmus doubled in between walks to Daniel Nelson and Randy Roth, giving the home team the bases loaded with nobody out. After Adam Rodgers fouled out to the third baseman, A.J. Van Slyke grounded what looked like a double play ball to the right side. Second baseman Mike DeJesus bobbled it, however, allowing Nelson to score and cutting the lead in half.
Down 6-1 heading into the bottom of the fourth, Quad Cities tried to battle back. Casey Rowlett doubled with one out, and came home to score one batter later on Wes Swackhamer's line drive single up the middle.
In the seventh, a one-out double from Hayes led to another run. With Hayes running on a 2-2 pitch, Nelson's line drive RBI single into left field touched down to cap the scoring, and pull Quad Cities within 6-3.
Cory Meacham (1-2) suffered the loss for the Swing, roughed up for four runs - two earned - on five hits and two walks while striking out a pair in only three innings of work. Trey Hearne, Kyle Sadlowski, and Matt Trent, and Danny Borne hurled the next six frames, allowing only the two-out home run to Bruce in the fourth. Since an error earlier in the inning caused those runs to be unearned, the Quad Cities bullpen lowered their collective ERA to 0.95 in 38 innings of work.
Jeff Stevens (1-0) was the winner for Dayton in relief thanks to 2.1 innings of one-run ball, while Zac Stott hurled the ninth for his third save of they year. Starter Travis Wood only hurled four innings, allowing two runs - one earned - on three hits and three walks with four strikeouts. UP NEXT: The Swing will continue their four-game series with the Dayton Dragons at John O'Donnell Stadium with a special starting time on Tuesday morning.
